Below are a couple of photos from haphazardly wandering around Adelaide's CBD in late 2024. I was driving through the city looking for bits of material for the walking Adelaide project.
The photo below is the back of an old empty 19th century building in Franklin St which had been functioning as a car park, for some time. There were no cars in the parking lot out the back and the building looked as if it was due to be demolished.
I didn't do a large format version. I should have.
Will more high rise apartments will replace these ruins? Currently, there is very little in the way of new office building being constructed in the CBD though there are exceptions, such as here.iHowever, it's still all apartment, and it has been that way since Covid. There is a lot of apartment building happening.
The result of this transformation of the city is that there are only pockets of urban decay/ruins left in the CBD. The architectural transition to the knowledge-based economy and a post-industrial city is well under way. Occasionally I do come across bits of rubble left over from the demolition of old buildings:
Generally, as the rubble is waiting to cleared, it is only lying around for a couple of days.
